I feel I must admit this straight up: I’ve never worn a puffer vest or jacket. First of all, I’m a Queenslander and I never thought it was cold enough to warrant one, and secondly I didn’t know how in the world to wear one! A reader wrote to me yesterday requesting my help and outfit ideas for puffer vests, and after doing a fair bit of research (read: mostly Pinterest) I’ve discovered it’s not as difficult as it sounds. In fact, you wear them similarly to how you would wear all the other vests that are currently making waves in the fashion scene (faux fur, tuxedo styles). The one rule I think I’ve picked up, is that the puffer vest can make you bulky on top – so if you’re worried about that, wear something to draw the eye downward, such as a scarf or a loose cowl neck sweater, and wear it unzipped – having it open also draws the eye downward. Also, try to keep it slimline on the bottom – skinny pants or jeans are your best bet. Puffer vests are inherently casual so they work best with weekend wear or back with jeans. Here’s some ideas, and if you would like some visual inspo for how to wear a puffer vest check out my dedicated ‘vest outfits’ Pinterest board here. Also, the amazing Kimba at Kimbalikes did a piece on the puffer vest last year – check it out here for more ideas.
