This morning I wore velvet culottes to the playground. Topped off with a felt fedora and heeled boots. Maybe not what you’d expect for ‘taking the kids to the playground’ attire (and I got the stares to prove it!), but I gave exactly zero f$*ks. This is a far cry from the 18 year old who was scared to wear JEANS because she thought she looked ‘fat’. And who only wore clothes that were peer approved.
I’m going to admit right here that I have previously always worried about what others thought of me and the clothes I wore. Worried if they were laughing about me behind my back, worried that they thought I was weird, or too old, or too young, or a ‘fashion victim’.
Maybe it’s age, maybe it’s wisdom (I’m sure I must have some by now, haha!). I do know a lot can be credited to sharing my outfits every day on Instagram and being part of Styling You’s #everydaystyle crew (thank you Nikki!). And being inspired by people such as Sally Steele at Steele My Style, who’s trademark is ‘dare more, care less’ (I just love that!). But you know the saying ‘what someone thinks of you is none of your business’ – well, that just really makes sense to me now. Finally!
Life’s too short to NOT wear what you want. There are NO rules on what you should wear at what age, at what size, kids or no kids. If you want to wear it, feel great in it, it works for your lifestyle and you’re comfy wearing it, then GO for it.
Today, I was super duper comfy in the velvet culottes, practical in the hat and I could very well still go down the slide with my daughter. And I felt like MYSELF. I chose the outfit because I liked it. It’s fun, it’s not too serious and it’s celebrating the glorious Brisbane winter weather.
*ONLY velvet culottes, available at Myer | *Little Blue Boutique knit AUD$45 | Spend-less Shoes boots (not current) |*Colette bag AUD$64.99
So, if you want to try that trend, you know, the one you’ve wanted to try but thought you were too old, too big, too small, too short, too tall – try it, because the only ‘too’ is life – it’s too short. Have fun with fashion, enjoy wearing what you want to wear.
Have you every felt too self conscious to try a new trend?

So much wisdom in this post Jasmine. Thank you. I think sometimes when we’re questioning ourselves and our decisions we can get far too caught up in profundity. Thanks for saying it so simply.
