I’ve had this little mini black cocktail dress hanging in my wardrobe for a while now, and I just have not had the occasion to wear it. I was not planning on going anywhere today however I thought I’d play around with dressing it down to make it appropriate for day time.
Although it’s possibly a little dressy for a convenience store run and a coffee pick up, it’s a cute way to get more wear out of a little black dress, don’t you think?
This dress is quite short – I’m 158cm and it’s a mini length on me – so keep that in mind (I’m wearing a size L which I estimate to be a 10). The sleeves are seperate to the dress so once you’re in the dress you slip them on, and I have to say they were a little tight. I think you can also wear it with the sleeves hanging down, too.
I’ve paired it with the vest I featured last week, some casual sunnies, and sandals for a comfy daytime look. I usually wear bright hippie however this outfit would look a bit too done with lipstick so I went sans makeup.
My top tips for dressing down a dressy-dress:
- If the dress is dark, pair it with something lighter – this will bring it into daytime. This can be shoes, accessories, jackets or a scarf.
- Add denim – a denim jacket, a chambray shirt or a vest will make a dress more casual.
- Add ankle boots in a light colour, such as tan.
- Don’t go overboard with makeup. The natural look is a good way to make a dress more casual.
- Pair it with sandals or flats – brogues, ballet flats or slippers will help make the look more relaxed.
- And of course – add your favourite sunnies!
