Kids = messy. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. If like me, you’re a bit of a neat-seeker and like things to be clean and tidy at most times (wiping benches is an addiction, you shower twice daily, wash jeans after wearing them once…I know, I know…) you’re going to need to take a chill pill because babies and solid food are messy. Messy, messy, messy. And once you’ve got a baby that’s eating solid foods, you’re going to need a high chair. High chairs make feeding baby easy and relatively fun, and it gives them their own little chair to just hang out it in while you’re eating or sitting at the dinner table. You’re going to want one that’s easy to use, and clean.
Like many first-time parents, before my husband and I had our daughter Hannah we stocked up on the baby goods we needed immediately – bassinet, clothing, blankets, pram, car seat; however we thought we’d wait for a few months to buy things that come later (high chair, stroller, walker….there’s so many things to buy, it’s exhausting!). So when Dorel invited me to attend the Pregnancy, Baby and Children’s Expo last month I took the chance to check out the items that we were yet to buy, and our now sixth month-old baby would need in the very immediate future!
One of the goods I had my eye on was the Safety 1st Lumbar high chair. Although friends had mentioned to me the Ikea high chair was a good buy (at around $25), I was keen to check out the features of the other models on the market, especially as we were wanting one to last for quite a few years, and babies. So when Dorel, who market Safety 1st, offered to give us a Lumbar to test out, I said ‘Yes Please!’
What I liked about it
Firstly, it’s pretty funky looking. I have the blue with black and white stripe number, which is appealing to me in the sea of teddy-prints. The blue part is wipe-clean and the black and white part is also very easy to spot clean (or I think I’d chuck it in the washer).
Secondly, it’s super easy to use. Although the Ikea high chair is cheap, it only has one height level. The Lumbar has a multitude of different settings, allowing you to feed your baby sitting at any height – even from the couch (yeah!). The foot rest and harness are of course adjustable, and you can also adjust the width of the legs (which can also be folded for easier storage). The chair can also recline, making it easier to remove a cranky baby. Well, that’s what I used it for.
The one special feature…
The very best part of this chair, though, is the lumbar support, which means there is no gap between the baby’s stomach and the tray (believe me, this saves a lot of mess and outfit changes!). This setting was a little sticky to use but easy once you get the hang of it. It certainly sets the chair apart from the other chairs on the market.
Cons
I couldn’t spot any flaws, and I do think you get what you pay for – it’s a good quality chair. Although there’s plenty of features, you don’t need an engineering degree to work out how to use them, thankfully! The simple design doesn’t look out of place in a modern home, too.
Would I recommend?
All in all, we’re very happy with the Lumbar and I’d certainly recommend you check it out if you’re in the market for a high chair. The lumbar support (no gaps) and its ease of use are superior features. More information on the lumbar can be found here. You can buy the Lumbar from most good baby shops including Bubs here for AUD$199.
Thank you to Dorel who gifted us with this high chair.
