Boyfriend shirt

The Boyfriend Shirt | Must-have Monday

February 16, 2015

We’ve had boyfriend jeans, boyfriend tees and even skirts, and now possibly my favourite item of clothing to steal from the boys is making waves – the boyfriend shirt. A little bit oversized, preferably in cotton, linen or chambray, the boyfriend shirt is amazing in the cooler months paired with skinny jeans or pants, or tucked into a denim midi skirt or shorts for casual days. My top tips for wearing them without looking like you’re wearing a pyjama top are to buy one that fits well on your shoulders, and pair them with a slimline bottom – cropped pants or jeans look best.

My love for the oversized shirt has not waned since I first discovered them many years ago while still at uni. I found quite a few at op shops for a couple of dollars, and paired them with jeans and boots and then shorts when it warmed up a little. It’s worth checking out the op shops for boyfriend shirts – shop the men’s section or the ‘plus size’ section for great finds. Plain white or stripes are versatile, however I’ve also had much wear out of a khaki shirt found in the plus size section, so try different colours and patterns too. If you’re thinking of hitting the op shops, here are my top tips for picking up a bargain you’ll actually wear.

If you’ve had no luck at the op shops, I’ve also found eight of the best high street buys under $60 that’ll fit perfectly into your autumn/winter wardrobes:

Sussan pinstriped shirt AUD$49.95 (on sale)

Target linen shirt AUD$40

Target polka dot shirt AUD$30

Glassons boyfriend shirt AUD$49.99

Cotton On Carolina shirt AUD$29.99

CO by Cotton On shirt AUD$49.99

ASOS colour block shirt AUD$58

Boohoo oversized pinstriped shirt AUD$28 (on sale)

Do you wear oversized shirts, or are you going to try the trend this year?

I am a mad fan of the oversized shirt. If only because I am super lazy and love leggings or worn out denim

Me too, Nicole! I love them with leggings and boots and a big cardi on lazy, cold days. Perfect!
