Where to Buy Cute Baby Clothes (On The Cheap!) | Mama + Baby

June 15, 2014

I’m going to admit it: when I was younger I thought the best thing about having children was getting to dress them. Yes I know, it’s pretty superficial, but I’m sure it’s a sentiment that is shared among many of us shopaholics! Baby clothes are just so darn cute. What I have found being a mama though, is there’s cute, and then there’s practical. If you can combine the two, you’re in like Flynn. And if you can combine that with cheap and cheerful, you’ve won the lottery. So, where does one find such cute, cheap and practical baby clothes? Here’s a few of my fave stores, and what to buy.

1. Next online.

Next direct is a British department store, and although I haven’t seemed to find any of their ladies clothes to my particularly liking, their children’s range is fab. (And tip – their men’s range is also fantastic – and affordable!) Shipping over $40 is free and it arrives within 5 days.

My top buys for little girls are their tunics ($11-12 here) paired with their leggings ($5-13 here)

2. Big W (can’t shop their full range online)

Big W has really upped their game when it comes to both women’s and children’s fashion. Their baby clothing range is really great. Prices range between $4-$30. I buy their $4.74 terry towelling onesies for bedtime, their tunic tops, leggings and socks. They also have a fantastic range of bedding – especially sheet sets – you can never have too many sheet sets – and also muslin wraps – the more the merrier with these, too.

3. Seed Heritage

Seed Hertiage is more on the pricey side, but if you need a special occasion outfit or accessories, Seed is the go. They also have a sale and outlet, where you can often bag a bargain, here. Because their gear is a too expensive for everyday, for a day out I usually pair one expensive item with cheaper items, for example I might pair Seed shoes or socks with a Big W top and Next leggings. Look for pieces that can be worn for quite a few months, too, for example we bought a Seed summer long-leg jumpsuit which our daughter wore from 2 months until now – it has ties on the shoulders to allow it to cover a few different sizes. And paired with a cardi and socks it’s perfect for winter too. It cost $39.95 but the cost per wear was very low.

4. Country Road

Again, not the cheapest range, but again great for a special occasion piece or accessories. And when it’s sale time, that’s the time to buy!

5. Etsy

I’m not afraid to admit that I’m addicted to Etsy! Etsy is a handmade treasure trove featuring hand crafted and vintage goods from all over the world. Etsy is the perfect place to grab something personalised (a monogrammed onesie, anybody?) or something super cute such as funky baby harem pants, a bandana bib or baby beanie. I love the stuff from Etsy sellers Kapow Kids, Truly Sanctuary, Hapne House and ThreadsandArrows

6. Target

Target has really lifted its game with baby clothes of late, with cute stuff to be found at great prices. I’ve found a few cute little tops and tunics from Target lately, at around the $8 price point. Worth a look. Target also has a great range of affordable baby goods – worth looking here before a specialist baby shop if there’s something you need.

7. Trade Secret

Some of my favourite buys for bub have been from Trade Secret. A pair or uggies, and a couple of brand-name dresses bagged for super cheap are on high rotation in my bub’s wardrobe – and no-one will know you paid half price or less for them! If you have a store near you, you’re in luck – but now Trade Secret also has top deals available online so we don’t all miss out.

8. Kmart
Kmart is worth keeping an eye on. Some of their baby stuff is a bit naff, but sometimes there are real bargains to be had. I bought this outfit below for a total of about $20. Worth a look. Just don’t buy their zip onesies – unless you enjoy undressing your littlie every time you need to change a nappy – annoying false economy – their zips only go one way.

9. Op shops, Gumtree and EBay

Of course, op shops are certainly worth a look when it comes to baby clothes, as is Gumtree, and EBay. Often you can bag yourself a bag of baby clothes for $5 or similar. And they’re sometimes worn only a few times before being passed on, so second hand baby clothes are usually in great shape.

Where do you shop for baby clothes, and what’s the best bargain you’ve bagged?
